Yes. HMRC will write to you directly if you are in scope for Making Tax Digital. The letter will explain what you need to do and by when. You can also check your MTD status online using HMRC’s tool or our Am I in scope? calculator.
How HMRC notifies you
HMRC contacts taxpayers who fall into the MTD Income Tax threshold by post and through their personal or business tax accounts. If your qualifying income exceeds £50,000 from April 2026 — or £30,000 from April 2027 — you should expect to hear from HMRC directly. They typically write to you well in advance of your first quarterly update deadline.
What the letter says
HMRC’s MTD letters explain that Making Tax Digital now applies to you, when your first quarterly submission is due, and how to sign up using HMRC-recognised software. They usually include your qualifying income figure and the exact deadline you need to meet. Keep the letter safe — the dates in it are your compliance dates.
How to check your status online
If you are unsure whether you are in scope, you do not have to wait for the letter. Log in to your HMRC online account to see any MTD notifications, or use our Am I in scope? calculator to check where you stand based on your income.
What to do if you think HMRC got it wrong
Mistakes happen. If HMRC says you are in scope but your qualifying income is actually below the threshold, contact HMRC via your online account or the helpline on the letter. Get written confirmation of any correction and keep it with your tax papers. If your income later crosses the threshold, you become in scope from that point.
