Quick answers

Sole traders: common MTD questions

Is there genuinely free MTD software for sole traders?
Yes. Sage Sole Trader is free for non-VAT-registered sole traders, QuickFile is free under 1,000 transactions a year, and FreeAgent is free with a NatWest, RBS, Mettle, or Ulster business account. All three are HMRC-recognised for MTD Income Tax.
Do I still need to do a Self Assessment tax return?
Yes — for now, MTD Income Tax adds quarterly digital updates, but you usually still file an annual Self Assessment return. Our guide to MTD vs Self Assessment explains how the two fit together.
Can I switch MTD software later?
Yes. MTD only requires that your records are digital and your updates reach HMRC on time — it does not lock you into one provider. Export your data, start the next quarter in the new tool, and keep your old records for at least six years.
